AI SEO Content Audit: FreshRank vs Claude Code Review and Case Study

FreshRank, Claude Code, and SEMrush walked into a content workflow. The results were more useful than you’d expect.

Here’s a workflow that didn’t exist two years ago: I used an AI coding assistant to write a 6,000-word science article. Then I ran it through an AI-powered content audit tool. Then I fed those audit results back to the original AI assistant and asked it to fact-check the auditor.

AI reviewing AI’s review of AI’s work. It sounds like a recursion joke, but it’s becoming the actual content production workflow for anyone publishing at scale in 2026.

The interesting part isn’t the recursion. It’s what each layer caught that the others missed. An automated audit flagged a sodium content error that had survived multiple rounds of human editing. The AI assistant pushed back on audit recommendations that would have stripped the article’s personality. And there were findings where both AI tools were wrong in ways only a human would notice.

This is the full breakdown: the tools, the findings, the fixes, and what it tells you about where AI actually fits in a content workflow.

The Setup: Not Your Average AI Article

The subject was a comprehensive guide to paddle board nutrition, published on MK Library. It covers why endurance paddlers hit the wall (known as “bonking” in exercise science), with specific fueling protocols backed by 17 peer-reviewed citations from journals like Frontiers in Physiology, the ACSM position stands, and ISSN guidelines. At over 6,000 words, it includes calorie comparison tables, a complete fueling schedule, meal plan templates, and a 15-question FAQ section.

But the article wasn’t written by a human sitting at a keyboard. It was produced through Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding assistant, working within a heavily customized framework. That distinction is important.

Training the AI’s Voice

Claude Code supports a project-level configuration file called CLAUDE.md that persists across sessions. Think of it as institutional memory for an AI assistant. The file for this project contains specific instructions about writing voice: which words are banned (words like “delve” and “moreover” that signal AI-generated text), required sentence structure patterns, how to handle citations, and when to use self-deprecating humor versus staying technical.

Beyond the configuration file, the AI referenced a separate editorial guidelines document. This covers everything from paragraph structure (each paragraph is one complete thought) to attribution standards (real costs with exact figures, never vague descriptors) to specific formatting rules (no em dashes, extreme variation in sentence length). The guidelines run several thousand words. It’s a full style manual.

The output doesn’t read like default AI. It writes in a trained voice with editorial standards that most human freelancers wouldn’t receive as part of a brief.

The SEMrush Layer

Before any writing began, SEMrush provided the keyword research and SERP analysis that shaped the article’s structure. Target keywords, heading hierarchy, question-based sections for the FAQ, competitive gap analysis. The human decided which opportunities to pursue. Claude executed within those constraints.

This is a point worth emphasizing: the AI didn’t make strategic decisions about what to write or which keywords to target. It received direction, then produced content that met both the editorial voice standards and the SEO framework. Three tools, three distinct roles. SEMrush for strategy. Claude Code for execution. And a human making the editorial calls between them.

There’s a fourth ingredient that no tool provided: firsthand experience. The article’s author has spent years on a paddle board, tested fueling strategies in real conditions, and made the mistakes the article warns against. Claude Code had the voice rules and the research papers, but the human brought the domain knowledge that determined which claims passed the smell test and which ones needed harder scrutiny. AI can synthesize sources. It can’t tell you what it feels like to bonk at mile four with no shade and no snacks.

That’s the article that went into the audit. Not a default AI blog post. Voice-trained, governed by editorial rules, built on SEO data, grounded in real experience. The question was whether an automated audit tool could tell the difference.

For our paddle board nutrition article, FreshRank returned 24 distinct findings: 3 High 6 Medium 15 Low

The headline findings were concrete and testable. The audit flagged a sodium content claim as materially overstated. It identified calorie burn comparisons that appeared skewed in favor of paddle boarding. It recommended structural additions like a “Key Numbers” reference box and HowTo schema markup.

“The article delivers strong, science-backed guidance with excellent depth and FAQs. Priority fixes: correct the coconut water sodium error; recompute comparator calorie burns for a 180 lb person; and, if available, cross-check hydration guidance against newer consensus than ACSM 2007.”

Twenty-four findings across a 6,000-word article. Some looked like real problems. Others felt generic. A few seemed like they might be analyzing the wrong version of the page entirely. Rather than treating the audit as a checklist, we fed the complete results to Claude Code for a second opinion.

The Review: Claude Code as Editorial Second Opinion

Claude Code had an advantage no outside audit tool could match: it had written the article. It knew the editorial guidelines, the source material, the voice rules, and the SEO targets. So when we handed it FreshRank’s 24 findings and asked for an honest assessment, the responses fell into four distinct categories.

Where FreshRank Was Right (and Claude Fixed It)

Three findings survived scrutiny and led to real corrections in the published article.

Coconut water sodium was wrong. The article originally stated coconut water contains “roughly 250 mg of sodium per cup.” FreshRank flagged this as materially overstated. Claude cross-referenced against USDA FoodData Central and confirmed it: most commercial coconut water brands (Vita Coco, Zico, Harmless Harvest) contain just 25-65 mg per cup. The 250 mg figure appears in some USDA entries for raw coconut water, but it’s not representative of what consumers actually purchase. The correction was made within the hour, and it strengthened the article’s core argument that coconut water alone is insufficient for endurance hydration.

The calorie comparison table was skewed. A table comparing SUP calorie burn to running, cycling, and swimming used values that understated the competing activities by 15-20%. Claude recalculated using the Compendium of Physical Activities MET values (the standard reference for exercise energy expenditure) and updated running from ~680 to ~800 cal/hr, cycling from ~570 to ~650 cal/hr. The article’s narrative was adjusted from “comparable to running” to “comparable to cycling and swimming.” Honest comparison, even when it made the subject sport look slightly less impressive.

Carb oxidation rates needed qualifying. The article cited a maximum exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rate of 1.75 g/min for dual-source carbs. While this figure comes from real research (Jeukendrup’s optimized protocols), the more commonly cited ceiling in review literature is 1.5 g/min. Claude changed the claim to “up to 1.5-1.75 g/min,” leading with the conservative number. A small edit, but the kind that matters for scientific credibility.

Where Claude Pushed Back

Not every finding warranted action. Claude provided evidence-based rebuttals for several recommendations that would have degraded the article if implemented.

“The opening narrative is too long before practical guidance.” FreshRank recommended moving a summary box above the fold, pushing the personal narrative below. Claude cited the project’s editorial guidelines, which explicitly require narrative-first structure: personal experience frames technical content. The audit was applying a one-size-fits-all content marketing template. The article’s target audience reads MK Library for the storytelling, not despite it. Recommendation rejected.

“Colorful analogies contrast with the scientific tone.” The audit flagged phrases like “bringing a library book to a knife fight” as inconsistent with the article’s technical depth. Claude’s response: this is the publication’s core voice. The editorial guidelines call for extreme sentence variation and personality. A consumer blog about paddle board nutrition is not a journal paper. The analogy stays.

“Primary keyword targeting is too implicit.” FreshRank recommended force-inserting keyword variants like “avoid bonk paddle boarding” and “electrolytes for SUP” into headings. Claude pointed to the editorial standard that voice takes priority over SEO keyword density. The focus keyword already appeared naturally in the title, headings, and body text. Cramming additional variants into H2s would produce awkward, obviously optimized headings. The article was already ranking well without them.

Where FreshRank Was Simply Wrong

Three findings turned out to be false positives, likely caused by the tool analyzing a pasted text version rather than the live page.

“The meta title is generic.” FreshRank reported the title as “Demo Analysis – 92c0d0aa…” This is the demo URL title from the pasted analysis, not the actual page. The live article’s SEO title was already well-optimized: “Paddle Board Nutrition: Why You Bonk on Long Paddles | Science-Backed.”

“No image optimization detected.” All five article images had descriptive alt text and were served in AVIF format at quality 90. The audit tool simply couldn’t access image metadata from the pasted text submission. Everything was already optimized.

“No structured data beyond basic Article schema.” The WordPress version of the article already contained FAQ JSON-LD schema with 15 questions. Again, the tool analyzed the text content, not the live page’s markup.

Worth noting: any content audit based on pasted text rather than a live URL will miss page-level optimizations. This isn’t a FreshRank problem. It’s a limitation of analyzing text in isolation.

Where Both Agreed (With Proper Scoping)

Some FreshRank recommendations were good ideas that Claude agreed with. The question was timing, not merit.

Three items were implemented immediately: a compact “Key Numbers at a Glance” reference box, HowTo schema markup for the fueling schedule, and a “Top 5 Biggest Fueling Mistakes” section designed for AI answer extraction. Quick wins that improved the article without disrupting its structure.

Other suggestions, including interactive calculators, a printable PDF checklist, and a section on female-specific fueling considerations, were logged as future enhancements rather than pre-publish blockers. All good ideas. All substantial enough to deserve their own timeline rather than being crammed into a finished article.

The distinction between “good idea” and “must do before publish” is where editorial judgment matters most. An automated tool can’t make that call for you.

What Actually Changed

Theory is useful. Concrete results are better. Here are the three most significant corrections that came out of this process, with the exact text changes.

1. Coconut Water Sodium

After

“Most commercial coconut water brands contain just 25-65 mg of sodium per cup (Vita Coco, Zico, Harmless Harvest), verified against USDA FoodData Central.”

A 4-10x overstatement of sodium content. FreshRank caught it; Claude verified against USDA data and implemented the fix. The correction strengthened the article’s argument rather than weakening it.

2. Calorie Comparison Table

The original values understated running and cycling by 15-20%, making paddle boarding look like a bigger calorie burner than it actually is relative to those activities. Recalculated with Compendium of Physical Activities MET values. The comparison is now honest.

3. Key Numbers Reference Box

This wasn’t a correction. It was a structural improvement both tools agreed on. The Key Numbers box gives readers (and AI search engines) a quick-reference summary without replacing the detailed guidance.

The Verdict: How the Tools Compare

After this full cycle, each tool’s role became obvious. They’re not competing products. They’re different layers of the same workflow.

Claude Code earns its keep on the second pass. It brings context, judgment, and speed. But it’s working from the same knowledge base that produced the original article. If that knowledge base contains an error (like the sodium figure), Claude may defend the mistake rather than catch it. The external audit broke that feedback loop.

SEMrush sits at a different point in the workflow. It shapes what you write and how you structure it. FreshRank and Claude Code evaluate what you’ve already written. Confusing these roles leads to using the wrong tool for the wrong job.

Where Human Judgment Is Irreplaceable

None of these tools can make the final call. That responsibility belongs to the person who knows the audience, understands the brand, and can evaluate competing recommendations against each other.

  • Deciding what to act on versus ignore. Of 24 findings, we implemented 6 fixes and rejected 18. An automated system would have applied all of them.
  • Knowing your audience well enough to reject “best practices.” FreshRank recommended a utility-first structure. Our audience reads for the narrative. The “best practice” would have made the article worse.
  • The editorial call on voice. When an audit tool says your analogies are inconsistent with your tone, and your editorial guidelines say analogies are core to your voice, a human decides which standard wins.
  • Recognizing when AI is wrong about your domain. Claude originally defended the 250 mg sodium figure. FreshRank flagged it. The human decided to verify. All three actors played a role, but only the human triggered the resolution.
  • Bringing firsthand experience that no tool can replicate. The calorie table looked reasonable to both AI tools because the numbers were plausible. Knowing they were wrong required someone who has actually tracked calorie burn across activities, not just read about it. Domain expertise and lived experience are the inputs no prompt can replace.

Takeaways for Content Creators

If you’re producing content with AI assistance, here’s what this experiment confirmed.

  1. Use automated audits as a starting point, not gospel. FreshRank’s factual catches were valuable. Its structural recommendations were hit-or-miss. Its page-level findings were sometimes flat-out wrong. Run the audit. Then evaluate each finding on its merits rather than treating the report as a to-do list.
  2. Train your AI assistant with your actual voice and standards. The gap between generic AI output and voice-trained AI output is enormous. A CLAUDE.md file with banned words, sentence structure rules, and editorial standards produces content that survives scrutiny in ways that default AI writing does not. The investment in configuring your tools pays dividends on every piece of content.
  3. Cross-reference findings against primary sources. Both AI tools were wrong at various points. FreshRank misidentified page elements because it analyzed pasted text. Claude initially defended an inaccurate sodium figure because its training data included the inflated number. USDA FoodData Central, the Compendium of Physical Activities, and peer-reviewed journals were the final arbiters. They always should be.
  4. The tools work best in combination, not in isolation. SEMrush alone produces optimized but potentially inaccurate content. FreshRank alone produces audit findings without context. Claude Code alone produces confident work with blind spots. Layer them. Each tool compensates for the others’ weaknesses.
  5. The human is still editor-in-chief. Every tool in this workflow generated both useful suggestions and recommendations that would have made the article worse. The sodium correction improved accuracy. The narrative restructuring would have gutted the article’s identity. Knowing which is which requires understanding your audience, your brand, and your content goals at a level no AI tool currently achieves.

The tools will keep getting better. The editorial judgment layer between “AI suggests” and “published content” won’t get less important. If anything, more capable tools make curation harder, not easier. The creators using these tools as inputs to their process, rather than replacements for it, are the ones producing work that holds up.
